/pool/data user projects#

The DKRZ Data Pool on the HPC system Levante includes several shared data collections intended to facilitate the scientific workflows of DKRZ users.

“/pool/data user projects” are a key component of the DKRZ Data Pool.

The datasets shared via these user projects may include, for example:

  • initial and boundary conditions for numerical models,

  • reanalysis datasets,

  • observational datasets for model evaluation, or

  • project-specific datasets relevant to a broad user base.

Each user project has a dedicated subdirectory under /pool/data on Levante, with an accompanying README file to support efficient data reuse.

The storage resources required for these projects are awarded in equal parts from the shareholder and community shares.

Sharing datasets via Levante /pool/data#

Obtaining storage resources for sharing

DKRZ users can share data via /pool/data by applying for storage resources through a pool-data user project.

There are two ways to apply for storage resources:

A) Data volume to be shared less than 80 TB:

  1. Users fill out the /pool/data storage allocation form and submit it to DKRZ Support (support@dkrz.de) at any time.

  2. DKRZ reviews the proposal, may request amendments, and can grant the requested resources.

  3. Upon approval, DKRZ Support assigns a new project ID (pdXXXX) and creates the corresponding directory under /work/pdXXXX with the granted storage space on Levante. This directory is then soft-linked under /pool/data/PROJECTNAME for shared access via the data pool.

  4. The granted disk space is allocated for up to 5 years. After this period, the application must be renewed.

B) Data volume to be shared larger than 80 TB:

Same procedure as A), except that:

  • The allocation form must be reviewed by the DKRZ Scientific Steering Committee (WLA).

  • The form can only be submitted biannually via the DKRZ LUV portal (see Resource allocation). Please select “POOLDATA” as the project type.

  • The assigned project ID will not start with pd.

Note

The application form must clearly describe the relevance of the dataset(s) and provide use cases that demonstrate the benefits of making them accessible DKRZ-wide via ``/pool/data``.

Documentation requirements of shared data, including reuse license

Every user project directory on /pool/data must include a write-protected README .txt file that describes the shared datasets and specifies the name and contact details of the persons responsible for the user project. The description must include the license(s) associated with the data, which should follow international standards (see CC licenses for examples). The README should also provide instructions on how to properly cite the data, attribute the data creator(s), and acknowledge the usage of DKRZ resources (see also README_template.txt). We recommend providing all references in BibTeX format as a separate file and storing this BibTeX file in the same directory as the README. A PDF version of the README file will be published online on DKRZ’s public user portal.

Note

The shared datasets must be licensed to explicitly permit open sharing and reuse. If a dataset is only licensed for restricted reuse within DKRZ (e.g., via file access permissions), the application form must include a justification.

For illustration, please download the example /pool/data user project documents for the ISIMIP3b project, which include the storage application form, the README, and the BibTeX reference file.
